Monday 24 September, 6pm - 7:30pm
Join Atiha Sen Gupta, the writer of Abi, and one of Britain’s most exciting new female writers, for a practical workshop exploring how she created a new piece of writing from a classic play.
Atiha will also discuss the process of working with young people from secondary schools in Derby, whose ideas, language and concerns informed the script of Abi - which tells the story of a fiery 15 year old girl and her experiences of modern society.
"I asked questions about what frightened them about being alive now – social media, societally imposed sexualisation and Trump were some of the most common answers. Although I visited different schools, similar anxieties emerged."
Commissioned in the RETOLD series as a contemporary response to Mike Leigh’s classic comedy Abigail's Party, Abi can be seen as a stand-alone piece or as a companion piece directly after Abigail's Party.
RETOLD is a series of new one-woman plays commissioned by Derby Theatre and written by some of the most provocative female playwrights in contemporary British theatre, aiming to crack open classic tales and see the story afresh from the perspective of a female character.
