After one of her regular visits to see grandmother Abigail in hospital, 15 year old Abisheera (‘Abi’ for short) decides to throw the BEST PARTY EVER at her Nan's flat.

Struggling to face the imminent reality of life without the only family member she is close to, Abi throws her all into the preperations. But as she tries to clear her head and the flat, family secrets begin to surface. Will Abigail’s past threaten Abi’s already fragile present?

The digital life of millennials is brilliantly captured in Abi, a fresh new play jointly commissioned by Derby Theatre and Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch. This vibrant one-woman show explores how a fiery 15-year-old girl experiences modern society by delving into her realm of boys, family, partying, ambitions and social media, with wit and flair.

"A delightfully enjoyable, skilled performance"

"A refreshing and delightful piece of work with extremely clever references to the original Abigail's Party ... a top-notch play that explores with great complexity the perils of being young in today's Britain"  - Roy Williams OBE

Abi is written by one of Britain’s most exciting new female writers, Atiha Sen Gupta  (Skins, Holby City) and stars Safiyya Ingar (Holes and LAVA at Nottingham Playhouse), who has recently finished filming for Stephen Poliakoff’s BBC period drama Summer of Rockets

Commissioned as a contemporary response to Mike Leigh’s classic comedy Abigail's Party, Abi can be seen as a stand-alone piece or as a companion piece directly after Abigail's Party.

Part of RETOLD: a series of new one-woman plays commissioned by Derby Theatre and written by some of the most provocative female playwrights in contemporary British theatre, aiming to crack open classic tales and see the story afresh from the perspective of a female character.

Previous RETOLD productions have included the critically acclaimed Jinny and the multi award-winning Joan.

"A must-see for any fans of Abigail’s Party that will make you look at the original play in a new light"
