Derby Theatre is thrilled to announce Rhiannon May in the title role of the Theatre’s big family production of Alice in Wonderland this summer, a new version by Nicola Werenowska, on from Saturday 22 June until Saturday 6 July.

Close-up portrait of Rhiannon May, a young woman with fair skin and blue eyes, wearing a black shirt with a gold chain necklace. She has a subtle smile and her brown hair is styled loosely around her shoulders.

Alice in Wonderland, the Theatre’s 7th BSL integrated and Captioned family show, follows on from previous smash-hit family productions made in Derby where audiences of all ages can expect a wonderful and whacky theatrical adventure on a ridiculous and riotous adventure through Wonderland. All performances of the show will be BSL integrated and captioned, making it fully accessible to Deaf and hearing audience members.

Rhiannon will play the central role of Alice and is the first Deaf actor and British Sign Language user to hold a
regular role in a BBC series, starring as Cara Connelly in Silent Witness for four seasons of the popular,
long-running TV programme. Rhiannon’s screen work also includes a leading role in The Riley Sisters, shows at the British Film Institute London Film Festival and an appearance in the BBC’s LGBTQIA+ short film Silent Pride. On stage, Rhiannon has performed in The Princess and the Pauper with the Hordern Ciani and Swanage Rep Theatre Company, and participated in Crash Landing: A Theatrical Sensory Experience at the International Deaf and Disabled Arts Festival in 2022.

Joining Rhiannon will be a stellar line-up of professional actors, plus a wonderful young ensemble company from the local area and a top quality team of creatives (a company including hearing, Deaf and interpreting performers and creatives). More details to be announced soon.

As Alice lands in a unique underground world, she encounters an abundance of absurd, mysterious and magical characters and comes face to face with the heartless and tyrannical Queen. Alice’s arrival from beyond unnerves the Queen, but when the adventure becomes too much, will our lonely heroine return home…or will she stay and stand up to the madcap majesty?

Alice in Wonderland, bursting with brilliant original music, will capture the imagination and curiosity of children and adults alike, a production perfect for all ages that will stimulate and excite the senses at every twist and turn.
