Derby Theatre Associate Companies
Derby Theatre Associate Companies
Derby Theatre currently have three associate companies, that we work with closely with to support. Associate companies are chosen by our Artistic Director and Chief Executive Sarah Brigham, in consultation with the rest of the theatre team. Appointment of associates is a result of a long standing relationship between the artists and the theatre, often due to geographical closeness and repeated working relationships. There is no fixed time-period attributed to our associates, as we believe our venue relationships are organic and ongoing. Therefore our associates may come and go as when the time is right.
As Associate Company of Derby Theatre, they benefit from commissioning money, rehearsal space in-kind, the chance to attend artistic programme meetings and feed into the running of the Theatre. They also have direct access to the advice, skills and expertise of Sarah Brigham, the Theatre’s Artistic Director and Chief Executive, along with other members of staff.
The highly acclaimed, Derby-based Maison Foo, exist to create mischievous new theatre that challenges audiences and tickles their imagination. Co Artistic Directors, Kathryn Lowe and Bethany Sheldon devise visual theatre that collides the everyday with the surreal, drawing on influences from puppetry, clowning and physical theatre. Maison Foo have been making innovative theatre in Derby for many years, and support the artistic ecology of the city and Derby Theatre through their touring work, outdoor performance and participation programmes. Their work has been presented at numerous events, venues and festivals throughout the country including the South Bank’s Royal Festival Hall, London International Puppetry Festival SUSPENSE, Edinburgh Festival, Birmingham mac and Birmingham Symphony Hall, Sheffield Crucible, Warwick arts centre and the Junction Cambridge’s Sampled Festival.
Derby Theatre is currently supporting them in making a new show for younger audiences and adults called ‘The Interlude’ which won China Plate’s First Bite Commission in 2017.
Milk Presents are an award-winning theatre company who shift perceptions of gender and identity through queer disruption, celebration and performance. The company is made up of Ruby Glaskin, Adam Robertson and Lucy J Skilbeck. Milk Presents have performed four of their productions to date to Derby Theatre, to sell-out audiences, as well as led workshops for artists and young people. Derby Theatre were delighted to co-produce their award-winning show JOAN, which has toured the UK extensively and received rave reviews from the press and audiences alike, winning Spirit of the Fringe, Fringe Award First and The Stage Edinburgh Award at Edinburgh Fringe in 2016.
Derby Theatre has recently supported their new production BULLISH which headlined Camden People’s Theatre’s ‘Come as You Are’ festival for three weeks.
Not Too Tame was founded in 2008 by Jimmy Fairhurst during his second year of actor training at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Not Too Tame came out of Jimmy's desire to create well crafted, entertaining and socially important work that appealed to a working class community. Money, subject matter and a misrepresentation of the working class are all factors that Jimmy believes have helped distanced people from the arts; challenging this is a key driving force in his work today. Not Too Tame have toured to Derby Theatre on several occasions and have built strong relationships with local audiences. They relocated to Derby from the North West in 2016. Find out more about their associateship means here.
Derby Theatre are currently supporting Not Too Tame to undergo some organisational development that will bring together two of their successful strands of work, Under the Influence new writing platforms and immersive touring work for social spaces.
Sarah Brigham, Artistic Director and Chief Executive, Derby Theatre said: “Maison Foo, Milk Presents and Not Too Tame are three fantastic, innovative and incredibly inspiring theatre companies who are both very highly regarded and have received high praise for their work, both on a local and national level. I am incredibly proud of our association with them to date and now, as official Associate Companies, I am thrilled that we will develop our relationship even further with them and be able to provide them with the support all companies fully deserve."
