Departure Lounge Festival 2018
Thursday 19 - Sunday 22 July
Departure Lounge is back for a sixth year! Derby Theatre’s hugely successful summer festival of fresh, new and exciting theatre, produced by In Good Company.
Departure Lounge Festival is the arts festival for groundbreaking work in the heart of the country. Every corner of Derby Theatre and beyond will be brought to life by extraordinary performances, workshops and discussion.
We really are reimagining what a theatrical experience can be and are committed to supporting curious minds and artists. There's the regular mix of Edinburgh previews, the best of the East Midlands blended with the UK’s most exciting artists and companies, sharing works-in-progress, performances in cafés and cars, all nighters, immersive and intimate performances and award-winning touring work.
This year we've gone international, with Theatre Replacement's Town Choir taking place in Derby's Intu Centre and a corker of a line-up being assembled for our Leadership In The Arts panel discussion on Friday. We are also teaming up with Little Earthquake to host East-Meets-West once again and re-charging our batteries and taking stock on our Sunday workshop day.
We’ve kept our ticket prices low, as we know artists and audiences aren’t always loaded, so check out our weekender and day passes below. With our Earlybird Offer you can even buy a Weekend Festival Pass for just £60 by booking before Thursday 31 May (saving a massive £80 per person). If you just want to pop along to an individual event nothing costs more than a tenner! At Departure Lounge you'll always be In Good Company.
The Thelma’s Coconut
Ever feel like you are constantly disappointing people?
Meet Rumi, a British Pakistani woman who’s referred to as a ‘Coconut’ (brown on the outside, white on the inside). Born and brought up as a Muslim, Rumi spends more time enjoying fine wine and bacon than being at the mosque.
When she meets Simon, a white guy, she hopes that his decision to convert to Islam will be enough to keep everyone happy. However, as Simon begins to explore his faith, Rumi’s world spins off its axis in ways she could never have predicted.
About The Thelmas:
The Thelmas are devoted to empowering women to redress the equality imbalance in the arts, supporting them to disrupt dominant narratives and create theatre that is big, bold and emotionally resonant. They crave authentic and bittersweet stories outside of the traditional female (BAME) stereotype and socially impactful narratives that reflect society but don’t look to solve prevalent issues.
The Thelmas are proud to be a New Diorama Theatre Emerging Company for 2017/18.

PlayShuffle is an open mic night for new writing, designed to lift plays off the page so they can stand on their own two feet. We provide the Dutch courage so actors can stretch their sight-reading muscles; producers and directors test their ability to sniff out potential and playwrights hear their work for the first time.
