Neil Duffield’s stunning adaptation of Charles Dickens’ treasured novel returns to the Derby Theatre stage for Christmas 2019.

Made in Derby and performed by a talented ensemble cast, this much-loved festive story will be a heart-warming experience for school groups.

Exploring Story

Using storytelling, drama games and imaginative play, this workshop will bring this well-loved story to life. Ideal for groups who are new to A Christmas Carol.

Exploring Character

Using drama games and movement work, this session helps the children to bring the characters from the story to life, and to use their imaginations to put their own spin on things!

Both workshops are brilliant for developing communication, social skills, self-confi dence, self-expression and group work and the two workshops can be combined into a full day workshop on request.

Suitable for: Key Stage 1 & 2

Stuck for ideas for your school’s Christmas show this year? We have just the play!

To celebrate the return of A Christmas Carol at Derby Theatre, we have a brand new, reimagined version written especially for 8-11 year olds, complete with music by composer David Lewington.

Scrooge is ideal for a class or a whole school production, to create on a budget or with full creative hands on deck. A rip-roaring adventure packed with music, a dance-off at Fezziwig’s disco and featuring the ghosts as you’ve never seen them before; we guarantee to help you create a Christmas show to remember this year!

Suitable for: Key Stage 2

*Price includes the rights to perform Scrooge in your school, access to backing music and Derby Theatre’s ‘Play in a Day’ workshop to help you get started - a fun, practical day to help your performers explore characters, ways of staging some of the scenes and an introduction to the songs.

Story Makers

Story Makers - Derby Theatre

Developing confidence, communication, curiosity and literacy skills, we help your class to create and act out their own unique stories.

Thiis is a wonderful child-centred approach that may start with a story written by someone their own age or an exciting object to stimulate young imaginations. We can also take a book of your choice as the starting point. 

By supporting them to act out their stories, children’s ideas are validated and celebrated and makes this a wonderful whole-class activity.

Suitable for: Early Years, KS1 & 2

Duration: up to 2 hours

Cost: £100 (1 hour), £160 (2 hours)

Discover Days

Discover and do with theatre professionals

Spend a day at the theatre and learn new skills. Discover everything from costume and set design to lighting and sound, in an accessible and fun way. See backstage and make your own mini-production to be performed on stage.  this workshop is accessible and fun!

For KS1 and 2

Cost: £6 a head

Develops team working, design and numeracy

Open up a world of creativity and imagination in your classroom. Taking a story or a play that you're studying as a starting point, our professional creatives will work with your class to unlock design ideas for props, costume and scenery.

Years 3-6.

These practical sessions focus on a topic of your choice and support teamwork and confidence-building, culminating in a short performance that will help their learning come to life.

Shakespeare for Primaries

Practical approaches and drama-based techniques will help plant the seed for life-long learning with these fun and accessible workshops. They enable students to read between the lines and unlock the language of Shakespeare by bringing his stories to life and inspiring them to learn about one of the most influential playwrights of all time.
