The Stage

Follow our trail of breadcrumbs into the woods this Christmas for a deliciously festive treat, perfect for all the family.

Hansel and Gretel need to get back home in a hurry, but in the enchanted woods there’s a cottage made entirely of sugary sweets and gorgeous gingerbread, not to mention a wicked witch to contend with. Can Gretel save the day and rescue her brother? And can Hansel leave the lollipops alone and actually help?

Derby Theatre’s Christmas production team bring another magical and enchanting tale to the stage. With lashings of original music, heaps of colourful costumes and a super scrumptious talented team of actor-musicians, Hansel and Gretel cooks up a mouth-watering show.

BSL Interpreted Performances

Tuesday 11 December, 2:00pm and Saturday 22 December, 1:00pm

Provided for people for whom British Sign Language is their first language. Please let Box Office know where you would like to sit: directly in front of the interpreter or on the opposite side, looking across the stage/action.

Audio Described Performances

Thursday 13 December, 2:00pm and Saturday 29 December, 1:00pm

Ideal for blind and partially sighted people, audio description is a form of audio-visual translation that uses the natural pauses in dialogue and critical sound elements to provide a live verbal commentary through a personal headset. All of Derby Theatre's in-house productions are audio described, as well as some touring productions.

Relaxed Performances

Tuesday 18 December and Thursday 3 January at 2pm

Relaxed performances are specifically aimed to appeal to audience members who are on the autistic spectrum or have sensory sensitivities, or those who would benefit from a more relaxed atmosphere as regards to making noise or moving around.

Each Relaxed performance will be adapted for the specific needs of the audience – house lights may remain on at a low level throughout, other lighting effects will be toned down and the volume of sound effects reduced.  Audience members will also be free to leave the auditorium during the performance and a ‘chill out’ area will be available.  There will also be some support materials such as a social story and synopsis of the production available beforehand.  All of these adaptations are intended to make the theatrical experience less stressful for our patrons with specific needs.

Here you will find Visual Journeys for our Main House and for Hansel & Gretel.

Dementia Friendly Performances

Friday 28 December at 2pm

This performance of Hansel and Gretel will be carefully tailored so people living with dementia and their families and carers can enjoy the magic of a festive theatre trip in a supportive environment.

We are already pretty laid back at Derby Theatre, but there will be a more relaxed attitude to leaving and re-entering the theatre and making noise, the house lights will be kept slightly on and there will be a quiet space available for use at any time before, during and after the show. There will also be plenty of our friendly staff available to offer assistance on the day too, including staff who are Dementia Friends.

There will be a Pre-Show Dementia Friendly social in the Interval Bar from 1:00pm, with Christmas Music and free tea, coffee and biscuits for anyone who wishes to drop in before the show. The Interval Bar can also be used as a quiet space during the performance.
