Socially Distanced Seating with Face Coverings

It is hard to categorise The Mermaid of Black Conch – a love story, Caribbean mythology, a historical novel, a novel about women’s rights and race – it is unique!

Set in 1976 on a tiny Caribbean island, David, a local fisherman goes out on his daily fishing trip, singing to himself and playing his guitar.  Aycayia, a beautiful young woman cursed by jealous wives to live as a mermaid, has been swimming the Caribbean Sea for centuries. She becomes entranced by David and his song and they form a bond.  During the annual Marlin fishing competition, Aycayia is caught and is perceived as a much bigger prize.  Rescued by David, the couple face ruin.

The Mermaid of Black Conch  is Monique’s seventh novel and, not only did it win the Costa Book Award 2020, it was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize 2020 and longlisted for the Rathbones/Folio Award.

Live Q&A: There will be an opportunity for Derby Book Festival Authors to answer your questions after the talk. If you have a question, please fill out a question slip before the show starts. These will be available by the entrance to our auditorium. After the talk, a member of our team will collect your question and read it out, so make sure you have it ready! We will try our best to get through as many questions as possible but cannot guarantee all questions will be answered.

Books Purchases and Post-Show Signing: After the performance there will be an opportunity for you to purchase books and get them signed by our Derby Book Festival Authors. After the show, books will be available in our Upper Foyer and book signing will take place in our Café.

Please note: Photographs will not be permitted.
