Amazing opportunity to be in a Main House show at Derby Theatre
A Red Ladder Theatre Company & West Yorkshire Playhouse Production
THE DAMNED UNITED
Thursday 7 - Saturday 16 April
Red Ladder Theatre Company are offering a unique experience for people (18 +) to be part of the co-production of The Damned United, which is running for four weeks in Leeds at The West Yorkshire Playhouse and for a week and a half at Derby Theatre.
Anders Lustgarten has adapted for the stage David Peace’s novel, The Damned United, about the disastrous 44 days of Brian Clough’s reign as manager of Leeds United in 1974. The book is not just about football – it is a really interesting exploration of fact versus fiction, as the story of Clough’s 44 days has become a mixture of fact and legend.
In the adaptation there is a clear requirement for a chorus of performers who are competent at movement. There are sequences where players from Clough’s highly successful Derby County team are shown playing beautiful, fluid football. This will be represented by fluid movement – there will be no footballs onstage!
There are also sequences where mannequins replace real people as Clough becomes more and more isolated and these mannequins have to be placed onstage smoothly and quickly. The chorus also enter the stage as fans, newspaper reporters and others and so they are a really active and essential part of the production.
The chorus also have some lines – they really are integral. Six chorus roles are available, but our aim is to offer more than six people an opportunity to be part of this production so that the chorus can have flexibility, and to allow people to build this experience around their busy lives. This also allows the chorus to be able to cover each other for enforced absences.
In Leeds we have recruited seven undergraduates from Northern School of Contemporary Dance, and we are looking for at least six undergraduates or people in Derby.
In order for the Chorus to feel part of the professional company and to give them a fully enriching experience we would like to involve the Derby chorus in the Leeds rehearsals which will take place throughout February.
We are suggesting therefore that the Derby chorus be available to come to Leeds on the following dates:
(Possible) February 1st (Day one of rehearsals – to meet and greet and become part of The Damned United company).
Wednesday 10 February (2pm – 6pm)
Wednesday 17 February (2pm – 6pm)
Wednesday 24 February (2pm – 6pm)
TRANSPORT IS PROVIDED
You would also need to be available for two rehearsals in Derby:
Wednesday 23 March (2pm – 6pm)
Wednesday 30 March (2pm – 6pm)
The technical rehearsals at Derby Theatre will be Tuesday 5 April and Wednesday 6 April and then the run of shows at Derby Theatre will be from Thursday 7 April through to Saturday 16 April, when the chorus will be called at 6pm for evening shows.
This is a considerable commitment and one which we understand cannot be taken lightly – but of course it is a golden opportunity for the Chorus members to have a real performance work experience in a professional production alongside some of the most skilled and experienced actors in the UK.
People interested in this will need to attend a workshop audition in Derby on Wednesday 27 January, 3 - 5pm in Derby Theatre Studio.
