Broadway and West End smash-hit Avenue Q plays at Derby Theatre this March
Winner of the TONY Triple Crown for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book plays at Derby Theatre this March
“A West End hit”
From Monday 18 – Saturday 23 March, the multi-award-winning international hit, Avenue Q comes to Derby Theatre for the first time ever as part of its UK Musical Tour. This phenomenally popular musical has had sell-out runs on Broadway and after 5 years in the West End, will play at the Theatre for six dates only.
Avenue Q, presented by Selladoor (producers of Spamalot, Footloose, Flashdance and American Idiot) is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the story of a recent college graduate named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door); Rod (the Republican); Trekkie (the internet expert) and other colorful types who help Princeton finally discover his true purpose in life!
Avenue Q has consistently received fantastic reviews since it premiered in 2003 and has been praised for its incredible, and slightly rude, comedy; approaching some challenging issues in a highly amusing way, making it both relatable and funny through its cast of hilarious, sometimes provocative, yet lovable, puppets. The show has a very broad appeal with audiences, from traditional to teenage/young adult theatregoers.
This cheekily charming musical tells the story of the lovable (and unforgettable) characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues – like what do you do with a BA in English? How do you find your purpose? And is the internet really just for…never mind.
Packed with mischief, bad behavior and a little political incorrectness, Avenue Q is truly the musical like no other featuring a soundtrack styled on classic Broadway show tunes.
Avenue Q was conceived by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (Co-creator of Book of Mormon and writer of the songs for Disney’s Frozen), and is an "autobiographical and biographical" coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. The musical is notable for the use of puppets, animated by unconcealed puppeteers, alongside human actors.
The cast includes Lawrence Smith (Princeton/Rod); Cecily Redman (Kate Monster/Lucy the Slut); Tom Steedon (Nicky/Trekkie Monster/Bad Idea Bear); Megan Armstrong (Mrs T/Bad Idea Bear/2nd Arm); Oliver Stanley (Brian); Saori Oda (Christmas Eve); Nicholas Mclean (Gary Coleman); Jasmine Beel, Chloe Gentles, Robbie Noonan, Ellis Dackombe (Ensemble).
Avenue Q is the perfect comedy show for ages 14+….so why not come along and see what all the fuzz is about?!
