“Astonishing, funny and sad…another triumph”
“Incredible…as harrowing and emotional as it was ‘belly laugh’ funny”
"A truly fine production"
(Playwright, Jim Cartwright)
Derby Theatre’s production of Jim Cartwright’s hilarious, yet heart-breaking, TWO is now open and receiving rave reviews from the press and audiences alike….but it’s only on until Saturday 24 March, so catch it while you can!
TWO, one of Cartwright’s classics, is a firm favourite with audiences looking for a truly great night out. With mesmerising performances from the cast of two actors, who play up to fourteen different characters between them, combined with the set including an on-stage working bar and special Experience Seats, all of these elements are proving a winning formula and a huge hit with our audiences.
Local and national press have described TWO as "A rich revival of Jim Cartwright's toast to love, in all its forms" (The Stage); “Fluid, poetic and startling” (East Midlands Theatre); “Derby Theatre has raised the bar with TWO…no doubt many people will be raising a glass” (British Theatre Guide); "The best production of TWO I have ever seen... the on-stage bar is a masterstroke" (Behind the Arras); “Astonishing, funny and sad…another triumph” (Artsbeat); “I came away stunned” (Theatreworld); “A mesmerising two-hander” (Derby Telegraph); and from the playwright himself: “A truly fine production” (Jim Cartwright).
Audiences are raving about TWO too, with comments including: “Such humour, humanity and heartbreak. Outstanding performances by both actors”, “Incredible…as harrowing and emotional as it was ‘belly laugh’ funny”, “Brilliant piece of theatre tonight. Incredible characterisations”, “Had me laughing and bawling in equal measure”, “Go see TWO at Derby Theatre…such humour, humanity and heartbreak”, “What a fabulous show! Highly recommended”, “It will make you laugh, cry and curl your fists with rage…see TWO if you can”, “In the on-stage Experience Seats tonight, it’s amazing being in the middle of the action” and “Brilliant production, go see”.
1 pub. 14 different characters. 2 actors.
TWO is hilarious, yet heart-breaking, and presents a slice of working-class life in a Northern local pub in the 1980s through a constantly quarrelling husband and wife landlord and landlady team, and the dozen regulars who pass through their pub in an evening; a place of failed aspirations and unfulfilled lives. All life is present in this pub, and through this range of colourful characters, the rich tapestry of their interconnecting lives is revealed; it is the heart of communities, it is where people laugh, share stories, celebrate and mourn. With the fragile relationship of our less than cordial hosts at breaking point, a rollercoaster of emotions unfolds.
Multi-award winning playwright Jim Cartwright has written extensively for stage, television and radio, and amongst many fantastic press quotes describing TWO, The Times described it as “The writing is brilliantly, surrealistically and comically poetic”.
