Holly Boyden is ready to 'Take Off' with IGC's new-writing development opportunity
In light of their expanding programme and partnership, In Good Company have increased the support on offer for writers across the region, and continue to advocate for more focus on new writing from those best placed to do so.
IGC have teamed up with Nottingham Playhouse and Arena Theatre in Wolverhampton to develop a brand new new-writing development opportunity, which was shortlisted for earlier this year. Take Off aims to support writers to get feedback, raise their profile, connect them with opportunities and organisations and support them to help themselves in the future.
Ben Anderson, Creative Producer for In Good Company said:
"The shortlisted writers both demonstrated a clear understanding of dialogue, stagecraft and an understanding of structure and plot through their synopsis. There was a clear difference between those applications that had employed marketing copy for their synopsis and those had described narrative and plot."
"We are delighted to announce we have been working with Holly Boyden over the last few months. Holly is a Nottingham born writer and performer whose practice interrogates sexuality, love and liminal experience. It Kind of Looks Like a Doughnut is Holly’s first professional outing as a writer."
"In order to make best use of the resources that we have available for this opportunity, we made a conscious effort to make the criteria fairly specific, to really support a piece in a very particular moment of its creation. A piece which was ready to go from page to stage, but not yet ready for full production. We looked for writers with a strong ‘voice’, who were telling an interesting story and had a clear understanding of how their story works as theatre."
"This opportunity was built in response to the lack of opportunities for writers in the region, in particular theatre makers interested in new writing exclusively."
Holly says "I am chuffed to bits that IGC have chosen to support me."
Holly will be workshopping the piece at Nottingham Playhouse and Arena Theatre in the autumn of 2019. At the end of week 1 there will be a sharing of the work at Nottingham Playhouse. It will also be programmed as part of Arena Theatre’s Theatre Supper programme.
In Good Company has committed to taking 3 pieces of new writing from page to stage over the course of the programme. Applications will open again in Spring 2020.
