Community auditions being held for a big production of The Jungle Book this Easter

An exciting chance for members of the community to perform on the main stage in Derby Theatre's big production of The Jungle Book this Easter.

Auditions being held on Saturday 26 January.

This spring, Derby Theatre will produce and present an enthralling and exciting adaptation, complete with original live music, of Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Jungle Book.

The Jungle Book will be the perfect production for the whole family to enjoy together next spring and Derby Theatre is thrilled to announce that they are offering members of the community the chance to perform in the show alongside a company of professional actors.

Audition Details - for Saturday 26 January

Community auditions to perform in The Jungle Book will be held at Derby Theatre on Saturday 26 January in groups of 20, with time slots available throughout the day. Auditions are open to all and we are looking for young people and adults alike (aged 9+) of all genders, ethnicities and abilities to perform as part of the full acting company in the production.

The Jungle Book will have fully integrated BSL interpretation (as well as Captioning and Audio Description) and the company and team will also include D/deaf artists and creatives. As such, we are particularly interested in welcoming D/deaf people from the region to audition for the community company (and a BSL interpreter will be present at all auditions). Previous experience in performing is not essential, but an eagerness and energy to perform, and a strong commitment to the production, is!

Each audition slot will last for one hour, and all auditionees will take part in a range of group drama exercises and games, as well as asked to sing/perform/present in a group. You will need to wear comfortable clothes and footwear and bring along a bottle of water for refreshment.

The Theatre is looking for three teams, to include up to 15 per team, who will perform on a rotational basis (with a final performance schedule for the community company still to be confirmed). Community rehearsals will commence from Monday 25 February and the community company will be required to rehearse three times a week during the whole rehearsal period, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm and on Saturday mornings from 10am. Rehearsals, including the technical week of the show, will run until Friday 5 April and the The Jungle Book  will then run at Derby Theatre, on the main stage, from Friday 5 April until Saturday 20 April.

The community company will need to attend ALL rehearsals and be available throughout the whole run of the production.
PLEASE NOTE: this is a non-paid opportunity but an allocation of free tickets will be offered to all company members.

For those wishing to audition who are at the younger end of the scale (i.e. not yet 9): as long as you are 9 by the time rehearsals start (on Monday 25 February), you are still ok to audition.

Audition slots for 9-18 year olds will be held at 10am and 12.30pm.

Audition slots for ages 19 upwards will be held at 11.15am and 2.30pm.

Stuart Allen (Senior Producer, Derby Theatre) said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity to join our community company, performing alongside an adult company of professional actors, for our family production of The Jungle Book this Easter. We are absolutely thrilled that this will be our first Derby Theatre produced fully integrated BSL interpreted and captioned production, with lively original music, stunning sets and costumes. We’re very much looking forward to meeting members of our community who are eager to audition and perform with our company of actor-musicians. You don’t have to have previous performance experience, so why not come along to the audition and give it a go?”

Other opportunities to get involved
In addition to performing, we are also offering other opportunities to get involved in the production process for The Jungle Book, including exciting opportunities to get involved in producing, marketing, backstage and front of house.
