We chatted to Xavier de Sousa about his show POST which comes to our Studio theatre this March. Have a look and read about the show below...
My name is Xavier de Sousa, I am a Portugal-born artist living in the UK. I make theatre and durational performances, and I also curate and produce events. My main focus at the moment is food and art that explores the dichotomies between being present and feeling alienated.
Tell us about the show…
POST was born out of wanting to express a feeling that I have been having in the UK for a while: that of being present but not really being visible or heard. So the show invites you to the dinner table, to eat some yummy Portuguese food (both meaty and veggie), drink potent Cachaca (or you can also have juice if you’re not into alcohol!) and to have a frank discussion/argument about what we perceive as national identity, really. It is also a place for the representation of dissenting voices and the questioning of how we learn history and what we consider ‘community’ to be. But I want us to have fun whilst doing it, of course. I want people to feel welcomed, represented and respected in the room. It is a fun, sometimes quite raucus, show that hopefully makes everyone feel welcomed and like they are part of a community.
What was your favourite part of the process and why?
Having people at the table, cooking, eating and drinking is my favourite thing in the world. I love hosting people - I think that is quite Portuguese of me - and getting to know different perspectives, even when I don't agree with them. So it felt natural to me to devise the show in a way that I could play host and at the same time reflect on borders and national identity, and our colonial pasts.
Why should people come and see the show?
The show is fun and, hopefully, interesting to most. National identity, food and community are elements that we can all relate to somehow, and topics that are current to what is happening in the UK and across the western world. But also because they might want to get some chilled out fun and experience something a bit different, a bit new, from their usual Friday night at the theatre. I promise you, I cook a mean kale soup and serve the best cachaca (Brazilian drink) you will find!
