Spectacular sensory show for young audiences in the Studio this summer

FIVE times the fun this summer with spectacular sensory show for young audiences at Derby Theatre

Following on from our hugely popular production of Holiday last year, a fun-filled show for under 6s and their families, Derby Theatre is delighted to announce that their summer production in the Studio for 2019, aimed at ages 3-6 years, and in co-production with WinterWalker and Theatre Hullabaloo, will be FIVE, a playful exploration of our five human senses.

Derbyshire-based family theatre company, WinterWalker is set to delight young audiences and their families with this spectacular show that will run from Wednesday 31 July – Saturday 10 August.

Taking young audiences on a sensory journey, FIVE inspires little ones to use their eyes and ears, noses and mouths, fingers and feet to discover a world of play that makes the ordinary extraordinary. The high-energy show packed with dance, music and clowning is warm, funny and inclusive and the perfect introduction to live performance for children age 3 to 6 and their grown-ups!

The playful exploration of the human senses is bought to us by Belper-based family theatre specialists WinterWalker, the company behind The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and Three Keepers. FIVE is directed and choreographed by Kitty Winter, and Derby Theatre audiences will already be familiar with her work as she’s the choreographer behind their Christmas productions, including Hansel and Gretel and Peter Pan. WinterWalker’s Co-Artistic Director, Wayne Walker Allen, is composer and performer of the live music in the piece and is known for his work with Darren Ellis Dance and Richard Alston Dance Company.

“Absolutely magical from beginning to end. I can’t imagine a more positive, joyful and memorable way for children to be introduced to this art form.”

WinterWalker’s Kitty Winter said of FIVE:
“When I originally began thinking about the show, I wanted an idea that was simple but fundamental, something shared by anyone watching, regardless of age, gender, race or life experience. After some playing, the theme of the five senses emerged, and fit the bill. Our senses are how we encounter the world physically, and movement and dance seem to flow organically when we use them all and focus on the sensations.”

FIVE captures and celebrates how it feels to be very young, encountering the world and discovering how your body exists within it. It aims to introduce dance to young audiences as an organic and natural extension of your own body’s movement; a joyful experience open to all. There is no narrative or moral message, simply a suggestion that a good way to deal with the unexpected is to engage and play with it. FIVE is also completely non-verbal, making it accessible for D/deaf audiences and those whose first language is not English.

Co-Artistic Director Wayne Walker-Allen added:
“We’re delighted to be able to bring FIVE to our home city. FIVE was originally created a decade ago as a way of introducing young audiences to movement at a time when contemporary dance shows for young children were almost non-existent. Last year, the original commissioners of the show, Theatre Hullabaloo, approached us to ask whether we would consider revisiting FIVE and we jumped at the chance, The show returned to Theatre Hullabaloo earlier this year to mark the venue’s 10th anniversary, and sold out. It’s now been enjoyed by nearly 6,000 children and their families in the UK and in Canada. To be able to bring the show to Derby as the Theatre’s summer show is something very special.”

FIVE runs from Wednesday 31 July to Saturday 10 August, with performances at 11.00am and 1.30pm each day. Tickets are £12.00, with concessions for under 6s at £10.00. However, the first 200 tickets for FIVE are available for only £8.00 each, but they are being sold on a first-come-first-served basis, so once they’re gone, they’re gone.
