Current Funded Projects
Derby Theatre is gaining a national reputation for its programme of work with individuals and local community groups. Many of the individual projects are aimed at supporting young people and community groups to take part in creative activity.
As an arts charity we think everyone in Derby should have the opportunity to get involved in the arts. We believe Derby Theatre is a stronger organisation for involving and listening to the widest range of local people. We are proud of this work and of the people who see and create work with us. Current funded projects generously supported by both the public and by funding bodies include:
This project works with children in care and care leavers in Derby City and Derbyshire. It aims to provide visits to the Theatre, workshops and placements for scores of young people, and has been funded by generous individuals, Barnardo’s and The Mighty Creatives. Derby Theatre heads up the Plus One project for Derby’s Strategic Cultural Group which also includes Deda, Derby Museums, QUAD and Sinfonia Viva.
Derby Cultural Education Partnership (DCEP)
Derby Theatre is the lead partner for Derby's Cultural Education Partnership, also known as DCEP. We aim to provide every child and young person with opportunities to thrive in our city and experience of a variety of culture to develop their skills, life chances and fulfil their highest ambitions.
We work closely together with our cultural partners, including Quad, Deda, Derby Museums, Sinfonia ViVA, Baby People and East Midlands Caribbean Carnival Arts Network (EMCCAN), providing high-quality cultural experiences across our city and helpfing schools evidence development against the Ofsted framework.
Buxton resident Doreen Weaver has very generously set up a Fellowship in memory of her husband Brian Weaver. The Fellowship supports an aspiring actor from Derbyshire to appear in 2 professional productions at Derby Theatre and to receive mentoring from our Artistic Director and Head of Learning. Previous recipients of the award include Adam Horvath, Jake Waring and Helena Rimmer.
The artist development programme for emerging artists in the East Midlands. Derby Theatre heads up this programme in collaboration with Create Theatre, Mansfield, Burton Brewhouse, Lincolnshire One Venues and Attenborough Arts Centre, Leicester. The project is funded by Grants for the Arts (Arts Council England) and the partner venues.
The aim of our Start Programme is to introduce pupils who may not otherwise get the chance, to come and experience professional theatre. We work with over 500 pupils a year to inspire them to want to learn more about theatre and drama. Here they have the chance to develop their skills of critical evaluation as well as to develop their own creative responses to the work on stage.
