Mountains: The Dreams of Lily Kwok

Thursday 10 - Saturday 12 May

Mountains is the first major tour of a British East Asian play and tells the extraordinary story of the three generations of women behind famous Manchester restaurant Sweet Mandarin. Based on Helen Tse’s family memoir of passion, sacrifice and survival, the show will also include live cooking onstage.

Mountains is the latest production to be presented by the Black Theatre Live consortium of venues, of which Derby Theatre is part of, whose joint mission is to commission and showcase excellent theatre from BAME (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic) companies and artists.

Education Resource Pack

Debates around race, family, migration, wellbeing and identity have become the preeminent concerns of our times. The play explores key themes and issues which cross the National Curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4, and touches on KS 5, and could be explored with young people in a workshop or classroom environment.

Brighton Rock

Pilot Theatre and York Theatre Royal are proud to bring the dark underworld of Graham Greene’s classic novel Brighton Rock to the stage in this new adaptation by acclaimed writer Bryony Lavery. An unmissable version of this gripping noir thriller.

Play In A Week - Pilot Theatre's Schools Project

An exciting creative engagement project linked to the show exploring students’ creative response to Brighton Rock by focusing on key scenes and extracts, exploring themes, characters and plot. 

This series of five exciting and practical workshops could take place during curriculum time (Drama, English, Media Studies) or as a lunchtime or after-school project. The project would culminate in an interactive theatrical event performed by students, exploring the underworld of this exciting thriller. This will be an amazing opportunity to work closely with Pilot Theatre’s artistic team including with film makers and script writers, to create something unique and very special.

Marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, Birdsong is the hit, critically acclaimed stage show based on the world famous novel by Sebastian Faulks.

Workshops exploring the First World War and the Birdsong text are available. They will use drama techniques to give a deeper understanding of the period.

See backstage and meet the professionals who work across all the departments.  Learn about the broad range of career paths in theatre, experience what our staff do and find out how they became invovled in professional theatre work.

Backstage Tour

A great introduction to theatre. From the dressing rooms to the fly floor, come and take a look into the backstage world of theatre.

Both these sessions are perfect for Arts Awards.

Shakespeare in Practice

These workshops will provide students with practical approaches to explore ways to unlock Shakespeare's language and bring the text to life. As either a first introduction or a deeper study of a chosen plays language, characters and theme we can tailor them to meet your learning objectives.

You can choose from the following workshops:

First Encounter Workshop: An introduction to a Shakespeare play

Exploration Workshop: A deeper study into a Shakespeare play, unpicking key speeches ans scenes.
