DEparture Lounge Check-In 2015

DEparture Lounge is In Good Company’s flagship festival: uplifting audiences and helping artists take flight. The festival didn’t take-off until July 2015 but artists and audiences checked–in for the ride of their lives at this warm-up event at Attenborough Arts Centre, curated by In Good Company.A tasting menu of all DEparture Lounge has to offer, from innovative performances and insightful masterclasses to hook-ups and hang-outs with our creative community.

Fri 5 June

In Good Company Surgeries - 11am-2pm

Are you an artist looking for support? Come and chat to In Good Company about what you need and find out what In Good Company offers. We’ll also tell you how to apply for our associate artist programme and guide you through the application process. This is a one-to-one surgery for you to ask us as many questions as you like! Email r.glaskin@derby.ac.uk to book a place.

Table Manners - 12pm-3pm

Table manners is an intimate and temporary encounter between 2 strangers, who in other circumstances might never meet.  It is about the familiarity of sharing food together and the art of conversation. Each performance is for one audience member at a time and lasts 30 minutes. You need to sign up in advance via email or on the day. 

Masterclass with People Show - 3pm-5pm

For 50 years People Show have devised fantastical stories, dialogue and surreal meanings through words. In this workshop you’ll explore new methodologies for writing, editing and deconstructing text for performance. You’ll examine many different techniques through improvisation and games and learn from one of the longest running contemporary theatre companies in the UK.

In Good Company Associate Scratch That Itch - 7pm-10pm

Find out what our In Good Company Associate’s are up to. This is a great opportunity to see four brand new pieces of work-in-progress by Maison Foo, Spiltmilk Dance, Lapelle’s Factory and Nonsuch Theatre. They’ll also be an opportunity to offer valuable feedback to help the companies develop their ideas in the future.

 

Sat 6 June

Producing Performance: The Basics - 1pm-3pm

This quick-fire session aims to explain the role of the producer and offer some key tips for producing performance. In Good Company Creative Producer Ruby Glaskin will share her experience as a producer, sharing knowledge and answering any questions you may have about producing your own work or the work of others.

TETRAD and IGC present... Return Flights - 4pm-9pm (7.30pm dinner served in the café)

Return FlightsReturn Flights showcases some of the most innovative work from Tetrad’s ‘Us and Them’ series of events. Come and join in with the creative conversations and exciting experiments as we see brilliant new ideas from emerging artists across the midlands, with the additional opportunities of networking and your chance to feedback to the artists. We are delighted to be working in conjunction with In Good Company’s DEparture lounge to bring you this exciting platform. Five artists, food included and funky improvised flights of fancy from the Tetrad collective, this is the perfect way to spend a summer Saturday. 

 


Sun 7 June

Playdate - Introduction to the acting system - 11am-2pm

LukeThe workshop is designed to appeal to actors, writers or directors who would like to explore the Stanislavski acting system in their work. The session will be looking at the history and evolution of Stanislavskis’ work alongside physical work that is robust and aimed at stretching you as an artist. There are 16 places on offer and loose or movement clothing should be worn. Prior to the workshop a one page duologue scene will be sent out and you will need to be off book (Learned) prior to the workshop. Luke McGibney is an East Midlands artist who trained at The Oxford School Of Drama and is a regular practitioner of Stanislavski’s work.

Greg Wohead: Hurtling (1-2-1 performances) - 11am-6.30pm

HurtlingHurtling is an outdoor performance for one with a cassette player and headphones that is remade based on location every time it’s performed. It’s a glimpse of a fleeting moment as it zooms past; an attempt to grasp at a slippery present. A performance for one somewhere high up with a view. Each performance is for one audience member at a time and lasts 20 minutes. You need to sign up in advance or on the day. 

DEvelop Q+A - 12pm-1.30pm

What opportunities are there for disabled artists and what more support do we need? A Q&A with special guests including artists Jo Bannon and Rowan James, Unlimited’s producer Jo Verrent and Attenborough Arts Centre Director Michaela Butter. This is an open discussion for anyone interested in access and opportunities for disabled artists. 

Jo Bannon: Exposure - 3.30pm-7pm

ExposureExposure is an investigation into how we look, how we are looked at and if we can ever really be seen. This intimate one to one performance is a tender and tentative look into autobiography, asking how fully we can reveal ourselves - to ourselves, to another, with another. Each performance is for one audience member at a time and lasts 12 minutes. You need to sign up in advance or on the day. 

Rowan James: Easy for You to Say - 7.15pm-8.15pm

EasyWith big beats and big words, set to the rhythm of his irregular heartbeat, Rowan James and beatboxer, Marv Radio, shine a light on the affects of a society obsessed with normality. Rowan James is a hip-hop and punk inspired poet diagnosed with a specific learning difficulty and speech impediment. Marv Radio is a beatboxer and MC with dexterous lips and an arsenal of sounds at his disposal.

A day ticket/weekend pass offers guaranteed entry to each main house performance (IGC Associate Scratch that Itch, Return Flights & Easy for You to Say). Additionally you also have access to the 1-2-1 performances, mentoring sessions, masterclasses or playdates offered on the different days of the festival. However please be aware these have allocated time slots or limited capacity. Therefore to ensure your place please email r.glaskin@derby.ac.uk with your ticket booking reference requesting which of these you would like to attend. These are offered on a first come first serve basis and you will receive email confirmation of your place.
