Following the runaway success of War Horse, former children’s laureate Michael Morpurgo is very much the flavour of the month.

With that kind of impetus and his books being so beloved by children, like Roald Dahl before him, we are likely to see a lot more of Morpurgo’s work make the leap to stage and/or screen.

So this adaptation of his 1996 book is very timely and welcome.

What is a surprise, to those who might not be familiar with what is the author’s favourite and most personal of his stories, is just how similar to War Horse it actually is.
